AN ACTION RESEARCH ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ONLINE EDUCATION FOR SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT PREPARATION *

  


Аннотация:
This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of online education while preparing students for the summative assessment. Two 10th grade classes were chosen, and have been compared against other peer classes with traditional instruction. The results showed that the classes with online instruction have shown unexpectedly better results on school’s summative assessment. Thus, the hypothesis was accepted. With online learning students can surpass others, who study offline and show extremely good performance

Interest in online education is growing very quickly these days. It has its own advantages and disadvantages. The main question is whether it is more effective than school’s everyday lessons or not. This study will answer a more specific question: if it is effective while preparing to the state exams or not. It is a common problem for NIS schools, when it comes to taking state exams at the end of 10th and 12th year at school. It is really difficult for our students to write those papers, not because the questions are hard, but because they forget a lot of formulas and it is a lot of materials and they do not have much time to prepare at school. I looked at results of my school for the last 3 years and we were the last among 20 schools. I wondered if there is a way to solve this issue. It is quite hard to make my students do homework and they said that they feel tired after the school. I thought that the only option left is educating my students online. So I started reviewing literature on this topic. I made online questionnaires about online education and about mathematics topics in which they struggle. Then I opened an online school and started to prepare my students online. This paper takes two 10th grade classes and compares their results against other classes, which do not have online education. Then conclusion is made on how effective it is to prepare students for their summative assessments. I checked Ali Alghazo’s work called “Comparing Effectiveness Of Online and Traditional Teaching Using Students’ Final Grade”. In his work he accepted his hypothesis and stated that there is no difference between online and traditional teaching. They are both effective. [1] This research estimated and compared the differences between the academic performance of students enrolled in distance education courses, relative to those enrolled in traditional settings, as demonstrated by their final course grades/scores, within the last twenty year. Here it has been clearly shown that in 70 percent of the cases, students taking courses by distance education outperformed their student counterparts in the traditionally instructed courses. [2] In this study the results revealed no significant differences in test scores, assignments, participation grades, and final grades, although the online group‘s averages were slightly higher. Ninety-six percent of the online students found the course to be either as effective or more effective to their learning than their typical face to face course. There were no significant differences between learning preferences and styles and grades in either group. Other research papers, which were reviewed by me, are listed in the “References” section. [3] I started my research by answering the following questions: How can I improve 10th grade external summative assessment results by using online education? 1) What type of online education should be used? 2) Will there be differentiation in learning? 3) How I am going to evaluate the effectiveness of online education? 4) Is there a significant difference between the classes with online education and without? I thought of one place where my students can find everything they need to succeed on their exams. So I opened an online school where I gathered materials, they could see their performance, chat with me, take online courses, watch videos and etc. I also thought of streaming on youtube and putting the links on my website. All students could work depending on their skill level. The effectiveness of online education is going to be compared against other 10th grade students who are learning in a traditional way. The main idea is that with online education my students can learn mathematics at any time they want. Can learn at any pace, at any difficulty. The hypothesis is that there should be a significant difference between the classes with online education and without.
