THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING PUBLIC SPEAKING

Abstract: today particular attention is paid to the implementation of two conceptions being a strategic importance for the quality development of the educational sphere, digital learning and improvement of the foreign language teaching methodologies, using science and innovative technologies in the spheres. The article highlights some techniques used in improving public speaking skills, required in language learning and teaching, theoretical material on differences between public speech and conversation.

Key words: English as Foreign LanguageEFL, methodology, jig-saw speech.

Particular attention is paid to the implementation of two conceptions being a strategic importance for the quality development of the educational sphere, digital learning and improvement of the foreign language teaching methodologies, using science and innovative technologies in the spheres.

Formation of the comprehensively developed young generation with deep knowledge and a broad outlook, training of highly qualified staff capable of thinking in a new way are the priority tasks of any society.

Working with students learning English as a foreign language we noticed that speaking facing the class is a big problem for some students. Usually, students are eager to answer the questions or retell a story looking at a teacher, leaving the audience behind. Dealing with this problem makes the instructor of English think about teaching some tools of public speaking.

Public speaking involves talking in front of a group of people, usually with some preparation. It can be in front of people that you know (e.g. at a family celebration) or a crowd of strangers. Unlike a presentation there normally isn’t a lot of opportunity for interaction between the audience and the speaker – the speaker speaks, and the audience (hopefully) listens. [2]

  1. Public speaking is more highly structured. It usually imposes strict time limitations on the speaker. In most cases, the situation does not allow listeners to interrupt with questions or commentary. The speaker must accomplish her or his purpose in the speech itself. When preparing the speech, the speaker must anticipate questions that might arise in the minds of listeners and answer them. Consequently, public speaking demands much more detailed planning and preparation than ordinary conversation.
  2. Public speaking requires more formal language. Slang, jargon, and bad grammar have little place in public speeches. Delivering it, we usually avoid using everyday and illiterate Despite the growing informality of all aspects of modern life, listeners usually react negatively to speakers who do not elevate and polish their language when addressing an audience. A speech should be “special.”
  3. Public speaking requires a different method of delivery. When conversing informally, most people talk quietly interject stock phrases such as “you know” and “I mean” … use what are called vocalized pauses (“uh”, “er”, “um”). [3]

Teaching the English language, we reckon with a problem, which is as important as the other issues of language learning. Students, especially at the beginning of the course, get nervous to make a speech facing the audience. Most of them feel the anxiety, which is normal, in fact, but teaching them to control their nervousness, to bring up a good speaker who can share his ideas with his peers and uphold them is the duty of the instructor.

In our opinion, it is urgent to guide the students in preparing speeches, especially if their future profession deals with teaching a foreign language, since overcoming language barrier and stage fright is of vital importance for the professional competitiveness of future teacher.

Various activities held during ESL lessons such as making presentations or reading the written essays on different topics usually help our colleagues to achieve the goal. One of the main issues of students in the class speech is their fright of facing the class. Therefore, at the beginning of the course it would be better to organize group speeches, we call them “jig-saw speech”, where each student in the group has his own part of the speech. Gradually, decreasing the numbers of group members we may accomplish a part of our target task. Individuals who may work by themselves might be observed.

Before setting students a task it is significant to focus their attention on the preparation which involves:

  • excellent knowledge of the material to be delivered- the presenter must understand the topic of the speech and since it is made in foreign language the meaning and pronunciation of all the words must be checked beforehand;
  • gathering the material- it should be thoroughly analyzed to be appropriate and informative for the target audience;
  • using eye contact and body language during the speechonly eye contact can reflect the interest of the listeners which the speaker should be concerned about;
  • making the speech interactive- using some tools such as questions or tests (riddles, quotes) to feel the feedback.

In the article we tried to highlight some techniques used in improving public speaking skills, required in language learning and teaching, theoretical material on differences between public speech and conversation, which will hopefully be useful for our colleagues.
